Gerry Cinnamon today releases his second album ‘The Bonny’, one of 2020’s most anticipated records, out now.
Glimpses of ‘The Bonny’ only increased excitement for the release, with 6 songs including the title track, crowd favourite ‘Canter’, ‘Dark Days’, ‘Sun Queen’, ‘Where We’re Going’ and ‘Head In The Clouds’ further enhancing Gerry’s songwriting credentials. Channelling his natural artistry with words, they tap into universal themes of the light and shade of life while drawing from rich, personal experience. Relatable with irresistible melodies, he has taken home grown Glasgow tales to the UK and now the world.
Explaining that bonny is Scottish slang for bonfire, Gerry says of the album:
“The Bonny’s just a metaphor for dreaming something into existence and building it bigger for the people you love. A lot of it (The Album) was written years ago at a dark time in my life. It’s a mixture of some dark stuff and a little bit of light in the distance. If you’re in a real shit situation it can be near impossible to see a positive outcome. I try not to contribute to the negative shit in my writing, there’s more than enough of that going around already. If I write songs about the bad stuff I think it’s only polite to remind the listener of the real reality. That it doesn’t matter where you’re at, it’s where you’re going that matters. Put the graft in and better times are inevitable. Easy.”
Despite the challenges of life in lockdown, he also expressed his determination to release the album and help narrow our social distance through music.
“It’s probably not smart to release during a lockdown when the shops are closed and everyone’s isolating but no chance I’m letting folk down. Never gave a fuck about numbers anyway not gny start now. Album’s out 17th April.”
For the artwork to ‘The Bonny’, Gerry was drawn to two iconic shots of life in the ‘60s and ‘70s for his alternating album covers.
On the first, a mother and child in their tower block flat, Gerry explains: “It’s the contrast between the foreground and the background that gets me. It’s the look in her eyes. Hypnotic. Look at the image as a whole, it looks concrete and dangerous but she looks strong... resilient. There’s not many things stronger in this life than a mother’s love for her kid. ‘The Bonny’ is just a metaphor for dreaming something into existence and building it bigger for the people you love. If that image doesn’t capture what ‘The Bonny’ is about, I don’t know what does. It tells a million stories.”
The singer / songwriter has become a phenomenon since his self-released debut album ‘Erratic Cinematic’ reached the Top 20. It has already sold over 177,000 copies and been certified Gold. Gerry has gone on to hit 160 million streams on Spotify, with a current total of 1.5 million monthly listeners, all achieved while remaining resolutely independent. ‘Where We’re Going’ has now already passed 5 million streams across Spotify and Apple Music.
The singer spent some of his ‘social distancing’ time signing copies of ‘The Bonny’, many of which will be sent to randomly selected fans who have pre-ordered the album.
‘The Bonny’ kicks off a huge year for Gerry on his journey from cult hero to one of Britain’s foremost songwriters.
While some dates on his huge summer tour are delayed by these challenging times, the shows have already been rescheduled for August and September. And Gerry is pressing on with his album launch, despite logistical challenges facing the music industry at large.
“Anyone that knows me knows all I care about is folk having a class night and getting home safe,” says Gerry, “so it’s a no brainer to move some of the earlier dates. Not ideal, but pales in comparison to the shit other folk are going through.”
An already legendary live performer, his gigs have become folklore – joyous mass fan singalongs inspiring devotion and a dedicated following that has swelled, via word-of-mouth, to epic proportions.
All tickets remain valid for the rescheduled dates. Fans are advised to contact ticket providers with any queries.
The tour will see Gerry playing to the largest audiences of his career so far with 200,000 tickets sold.
‘The Bonny’ is available to pre-order on both digital and physical formats. The CD and cassette formats both feature an alternate album cover, while four collectible vinyl editions will be available: standard black vinyl; a flame-esque red and orange vinyl available exclusively from Gerry’s official website; orange vinyl; and red vinyl that will be sold via select independent stores.
Gerry’s website also offers various bundles which include items such as a signed lyric book and a new t-shirt design.
