Judy blank’s ‘big mood’ captures love, laughing and the quiet battles no one talks about

Today, eclectic indie artist Judy Blank announces her Rounder debut album, Big Mood. Painted in pastel hues, checkered floors and dinosaurs, nostalgia collides with the unexpected, and every song on the album feels like a scene from a film you would love to be living in.

Born and raised in the Netherlands, Judy Blank fell in love with classic American cinema and the spirit of the open road. She first made waves in Europe with her offbeat storytelling and sharp wit, before moving to Nashville to record her ‘70s-inspired debut Morning Sun, which earned praise from Elton John and an RIAA Gold Award for Tangled Up in You. As the first Dutch artist to play AmericanaFest, she proved she could hold her own in the U.S. scene. Since relocating to the States, she’s toured with acts like SUSTO and Wild Child, played Willie Nelson’s Luck Reunion, and signed with Rounder Records, who will release her new LP Big Mood in August. With bold, genre-blending songs that tackle love, longing, and social issues, Blank continues to defy expectations and champion the underdog.

With a sound that nods to indie darlings like The Cardigans, Caroline Rose, and Phoenix, and a spirit that’s unmistakably her own, Judy Blank is carving out a space where introspection and joy can dance side by side. Big Mood is produced and recorded by Blank’s long-time collaborator Roy van Rosendaal (Snarky Puppy, Bombay) at Studio Ruisendaal in the woods just outside Utrecht, Netherlands. The 13-track album offers an eclectic sound. Her music lands somewhere in the realm of ‘60s girl group meets indie/garage rock, never losing the intimacy of a singer-songwriter. Her songs capture love, longing, and the quiet battles no one talks about. She’s unafraid to shine a light on mental health, climate change, and social injustice, always standing up for the underdogs.
