Steph Cameron Expands Her Sound Under the striking red hue of her ‘Blood Moon’
Saskatoon-based artist Steph Cameron, a Polaris Music Prize nominee, has released her new album Blood Moon via Neon Moon Records. The album draws from the eclectic sounds of 1960s British folk and the rich, evocative tones of 1970s country, folk, and rock, and artists like Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Fleetwood Mac, and Joni Mitchell. To support the album, Steph Cameron will embark on a UK and European tour in May 2025, joining three-time Canadian Folk Music Award winner Abigail Lapell. The tour will feature four UK shows, culminating at London’s Jazz Café on May 14, cementing her place as a dynamic voice in contemporary folk music.
On her new album, Blood Moon, Steph Cameron explores the glint of the earth and its spirit and speaks to our connection to the land, sky and one another. The title, Blood Moon, describes the moon taking on a striking red hue and roots the subject of the album in awe of the natural world and that of human connection. Blood Moon is Cameron’s first band album and highlights her growth as a songwriter since the release of her praised debut, Sad-Eyed Lonesome Lady, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year.
Says Cameron, “These songs share my curiosity about the mystical world, drawing on my attachment to the forests and the plains. This record explores the sounds of those places while telling stories revealing what makes us human”
The earthy sounds and warm tones that influenced Cameron’s approach complement the record’s lyrics. Yet, Cameron hasn’t abandoned the sharp social commentary and vivid storytelling that define her work: From a heartfelt tribute to her child, to a sharp criticism of the police shooting of an adolescent boy, to her deeply personal reflections on overcoming childhood abuse, the album invites listeners to see the world through her eyes.
