Vandaag is het nieuwe album van The Veils ‘Asphodels’ uitgekomen via V2 Records. Het album bevat de eerder uitgekomen singles The Ladder, Mortal Wound, O Fortune Teller en de nieuwe albumtrack Melancholy Moon.

Asphodels, het zevende studioalbum van The Veils, werd live op tape opgenomen in slechts vijf dagen in Roundhead Studios in Aotearoa, Nieuw-Zeeland. Het album ontleent zijn naam aan de Oud-Griekse bloem van de onderwereld, en tekstueel laat Andrews zich meer inspireren door grote dichters dan door traditionele rock-'n-rollsongwriters.

Luister naar 'Asphodels’

“I feel as though this album is the end result of a now disconcertingly long career in music,” vertelt leadzanger en songwriter finn andrews. “I think after your 7th album, much like turning 40, you should really just stop counting. I’ve learned a lot along the way, which I suppose is the whole point, and I’ve really distilled it all into these 9 songs. As always, I really just write about love and death - it’s a compulsion - and that is once again the case here. But I feel as though I’ve never been able to express this stuff rattling about in my brain quite as directly until now. I have rarely felt proud of anything I’ve made for very long, but this one feels different. It’s built on a strong foundation I think.”

De naam van het album komt van een bloem van de onderwereld uit de Oud-Griekse mythologie, en qua teksten laat Andrews zich meer inspireren door dichters als Federico García Lorca, Ted Hughes of Louis MacNeice dan door traditionele rock-‘n-rollsongwriters. “I lack the discipline to be a poet, so songwriting has always felt like the right place for me. But poets like Lorca, Ted Hughes and Louis MacNeice have all influenced my songwriting a great deal. It’s in writing and then singing these words that I feel most useful in the world I suppose.”

De samenwerking tussen Andrews en strijkarrangeur Victoria Kelly is een centraal aspect van het album, en net als bij het vorige album van de band ...And Out Of The Void Came Love, speelt Kelly een essentiële rol in het tot leven brengen van de nummers. Zo vertelt Andrews:“I really wanted the string arrangements to behave like another member of the band. We even fleshed the character out, like an actor playing a role. It’s this collaboration with Vic that is really at the center of this record I think.”

Het resultaat van al deze tumult en instabiliteit is een album dat een rustige, welverdiende zelfverzekerdheid uitstraalt, met een beheerste aanpak die zorgvuldig kiest wanneer het de intensiteit verhoog.
